Some people are disregarded for council tax purposes. This means that although they might live with you, we won’t count them when we decide how many people live at the property.

We can reduce your bill by 25% or 50%, depending on how many people we count as disregarded.

If we count only one person as living in your property with the others disregarded, we can give you a discount of 25%.

If we count nobody as living in your property as everyone is disregarded, we can give you a discount 50%.

You may be disregarded from paying council tax for the following reasons:

  • severe mental impairment
  • students in full-time education
  • school and college leavers
  • student nurse
  • residents in care home/hospital/hostel
  • carers/care-workers
  • apprentices
  • people in prison or who are held in detention under the Mental Health Act or the Immigration Act
  • members of religious communities
  • members of visiting forces
  • persons with diplomatic privilege or immunity
  • members of international headquarters and defence organisations
