Council tax can be lowered if a permanently disabled person lives in a home which has things only that person needs.
This could be:
- a room other than a bathroom, kitchen, or toilet, for the use of the disabled person
- another bathroom or kitchen, for the use of the disabled person
- space inside the home for use of a wheelchair
The council must decide if the disabled person would find it hard to live in the home, or if their health would suffer if the extra features weren’t available.
- if your home is eligible, your bill will be lowered to the valuation band below
- this will not affect the value of your home, or its banding on the valuation list
- if your home is in band A, a reduction of 1/9 of the band D council tax would be used
