Reusable period product trial to start

Posted on Thursday 11th March 2021

Two Newport secondary schools will begin to dispense reusable period products as part of a trial commencing this week.

The trial forms part of the council’s work on Welsh Government’s Period Dignity campaign, which aims to reduce the number of students missing out on education due to their periods.

The schools taking part will also receive a supply of educational materials relating to period dignity alongside the reusable products.

A recent survey, conducted by Newport Youth Council in conjunction with the council, suggested that 80 per cent of students would be open to the idea of using reusable period products.

Tacking plastic waste and littering is one of the youth council’s current priorities, and it is hoped that the trial will eventually lead to more reusable period products being offered through schools to young people.

Period Dignity funds have already been used to supply spare school uniforms and a range of disposable period products to all Newport schools, including through free vending machines in secondary school toilets.

The council has sought to minimise plastic waste associated with disposable products through the provision of non-applicator and cardboard applicator tampons, and is looking to further minimise waste through supplying reusable products.

The results of the trial and the survey will be used to influence future supply of products and educational materials to students across the city.
