Online event to support jobseekers in Newport

A free virtual event will be available on Wednesday 24 March to provide vital support for people looking for work opportunities in south east Wales.

The event, called Opportunity South East Wales, will run online from 10am to 12pm, and is a partnership event between Working Wales (delivered by Careers Wales), Jobcentre Plus, Cardiff Capital Region Skills Partnership and the National Training Federation Wales (NTfW).

People attending the event will be able to browse a range of fantastic employment and training opportunities available across south east Wales, covering Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Torfaen and the Vale of Glamorgan.

Jobseekers will be able to speak directly with employers to find out more about the vacancies on offer. Employment support organisations and learning and training providers will also be on hand to provide information on the support that can be accessed to help land one of the jobs.

Over 80 organisations have signed up to attend the event, including Screen Alliance Wales, Celsa Manufacturing and The Celtic Manor Resort.  

The virtual event follows the success of Opportunity North Wales held in January, which was attended live by over 5,000 people, with a further 6,700 views on demand. 

Speaking on behalf of the Cardiff Capital Regions Skills Partnership, Councillor Jane Mudd, CCR cabinet member for learning, skills and talent and Leader of Newport City Council, said: “This is a great way of safely showcasing a range of job and training opportunities across south east Wales.

“We are working with the many excellent and cutting-edge companies in the region to make sure people with the right skills can be matched with the right jobs. Training to help people enhance those skills or learn new ones is also available.

“Employers are still recruiting despite the challenging times we are in and this is a not-to-be-missed event for those looking for work or wanting a change of career.”

Head of Employment Advice for Working Wales, Mandy Ifans, said Covid-19 restrictions continue to prevent any face-to-face careers fairs or employer events going ahead, and jobseekers and employers are relying on virtual channels to find jobs and fill vacancies.

“We’re delighted to be able to host this type of event online to continue to provide much-needed support to those looking for work during the pandemic.

“We hope that by bringing together employers and job seekers, we can help improve employment prospects for people in south east Wales during a difficult time.”
