Natural Resources Wales volunteers join Gwent Contact Tracing

Posted on Monday 1st March 2021

Several volunteers from Natural Resources Wales were trained in January to undertake contact tracing work as part of Newport City Council's team, which forms part of the Gwent Test Trace Protect service.

Natural Resources Wales offered to help in December last year when the high number of cases of Covid-19 requiring contact tracing were a significant challenge for the service to deal with quickly.

The public's willingness to comply with Welsh Government restrictions has helped reduce the number of cases in Gwent and the service is performing well. Recent figures showed that it is successfully contacting over 91 per cent of cases and their close contacts within 24 hours.

Cllr Jane Mudd, Leader of Newport City Council, said "I am very grateful for the support of Natural Resources Wales to assist with the work of driving down Covid-19 infections in our communities.

"I recognise that it has been another difficult period for everyone since the current restrictions were brought in but I urge everyone to continue to play their part in reducing levels of this disease by respecting the restrictions and remembering that 'Hands, Face, Space' are still essential."

Debbie Hamer is one of the Natural Resources Wales volunteers and normally works in the Renewable Energy Team.

"I volunteered and was supported to go forward to work in contact tracing. I hope case numbers continue to fall, but I'm glad I could help and I enjoyed working with colleagues in Newport, doing something which directly supports the communities of Wales to deal with Covid-19".

Steve Morgan, Head of South East Wales Operations for NRW, said: "We all have a role to play in helping to beat Covid-19, whether it be on a personal or professional level. I'm proud to be working with a team who have worked tirelessly during the pandemic and are now willing to step outside of their day job and volunteer towards the national effort.

"Elsewhere within NRW, our essential work continues to protect our wonderful environment which we have all come to rely on so much during these difficult times".
