#IWD2021 Choose to Challenge - Cllr David Mayer

Posted on Friday 12th March 2021

In the week of International Women’s Day, we’re hearing from senior council figures on why they Choose to Challenge gender inequality.

Today, hear from Cllr David Mayer, cabinet member for community and resources.

“For many decades, as a trade unionist and as a councillor, I have championed the rights of all groups whose voices were excluded from our political processes. Gender inequality has been a persistent issue across national and local government, but in Wales we are fortunate to have a commitment from Welsh Government to work towards becoming a feminist government, where power, resources and influence is shared equally across women, men and non-binary people.

As equalities lead for the council, I am committed to ensuring we continue to challenge any inequalities that exist within our own working practices, and to developing innovative solutions which are based on the needs of our communities. Having a workforce which is representative of the communities we serve remains a priority for us, and is key to ensuring the services we deliver are inclusive.

Equal pay legislation has had a significant impact on progress across the public sector, and I am pleased to see the council’s progress in this area. I also look forward to the introduction of the new Curriculum for Wales which will allow us to further move away from traditional gender stereotypes and ensure a more inclusive approach to equality which reflects our city and its values. “
