LGBT+ History Month

Posted on Thursday 4th February 2021

This year, Newport City Council will once again be marking LGBT+ History Month, and will fly the Progress flag at the Civic Centre throughout February.

LGBT+ History Month is a month long celebration and acknowledgement of the rights, advancement and inclusion of LGBTQ+ people. This year the theme is ‘Body, Mind, Spirit’ and we will be sharing a range of resources, events and activities over the next few weeks.

Cllr Jane Mudd, Leader of the council, said: “I’m pleased to announce our support once again for LGBT+ History Month. Although events will look very different this year, it is more important than ever to come together and recognise the value that diversity brings to everyone living in Newport.

“I’m proud that this year we are flying the Progress flag to mark the occasion. This flag includes stripes to represent marginalised LGBTQ+ people of colour, and incorporates the Transgender Pride flag, recognising the breadth of sexual and gender identities that we welcome here in Newport.

“I’m also delighted that the council’s first LGBTQ+ staff network will officially launch this month. Our staff networks provide important, safe spaces for staff to come together, provide peer support to one another, and most importantly, influence our working practices and policies to make Newport a better, more inclusive city for everybody.”
