Report to set out positive figures for recycling and schools in Newport

An increase in recycling rates and improvements in primary schools are amongst the key headlines from Newport City Council’s forthcoming annual report.
The report details progress against the council’s corporate plan, ‘Improving People’s Lives’, which runs from 2017-2022.
Recycling rates within the city have increased to 64.4%, as a result of rolling out smaller household waste bins.
Meanwhile there has been an 11.6% increase in the number of primary schools categorised as green by Welsh government, from 62.8% to 74.4%.
Other notable achievements set out in the report include:

the development of the Newport Commitment

redevelopment of the Ringland community centre into the Ringland neighbourhood hub, bringing together more key services under one roof

successful implementation of civil parking enforcement

the launch of the council’s commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030, including the delivery of various bio-diversity and green projects to improve the city’s environment.
The report also highlights a number of areas for improvement, and sets out the council’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which began to impact the city in February.
The full report was presented to the council’s cabinet meeting on Wednesday 14th October, and will be published on the council’s website later in the month.
