Councillor Jane Mudd, Leader of Newport City Council, has announced that many council-owned car parks will be free on weekends throughout December and January.

Visitors to the city centre and Maindee will be able to enjoy free parking in the run-up to Christmas and during the January sales.

Councillor Jane Mudd, Leader of Newport City Council, made the announcement during yesterday's Christmas light switch-on virtual event.

"I would always encourage people to support our fantastic shops, restaurants, cafes and other businesses but this year it is even more important - stay safe, stay local.

"It has been a challenging year for everyone but our local businesses have have worked incredibly hard to make sure their premises are safe for people to visit.

"Free parking will encourage even more people to visit our fantastic shops, eateries and leisure outlets, as well as bringing a bit of Christmas cheer to our residents as they prepare for the big day."

Car parks included in the offer are Kingsway and Park Square multi-stories as well as the open air pay and display sites in Hill Street, Stow Hill, Faulkner Road, Riverfront, Emlyn Street and Maindee.
