Starting a food business

Thinking of setting up your own food business?  

Newport City Council will be offering free food hygiene training at Level 2 to new food businesses registering within the NCC area from the 31 October 2023 up until September 2024.

These training sessions are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and will run from 9.30am-5pm. They will be on offer for one person per business and each course date has 15 spaces available. There will be an examination at the end of the session.

The training courses will take place at either Newport Civic Centre or Ringland Community Centre.

As well as the Level 2 Foundation Food Safety course, an extra half an hour advice visit will also be available before their initial food inspection in order to provide a free Safer Food Better Business pack and probe thermometer. This will include advice on layouts and any other additional queries.

There will also be a Level 3 Intermediate Food Safety course running from April 2024 which will take place over three days, also on offer for one person per business.

Level 3 Intermediate Food Safety

If you own or have taken over a food business in Newport, you must register your business with the council at least 28 days before opening or taking ownership.

This includes restaurants, cafes, shops, delivery vehicles, hot-dog and ice-cream vans, and market and other stall

If you have a mobile food business and you intend to trade on the public highway in Newport you will need to apply for a street trading consent.

If you intend to sell hot food after 11pm, sell alcohol or provide regulated entertainment you will need to apply for a licence

You may also need to apply for approval of your food premises if you intend to use unprocessed products of animal origin (e.g. fresh meat, raw minced meat, raw milk or eggs).
