New electric vehicle charge points installed across Gwent

Sixty-two new dual electric vehicle 22kw fast charging units have been installed at thirty-four sites across Gwent.
The project has been delivered in partnership between the five Gwent local authorities: Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, Caerphilly County Borough Council, Newport City Council, Monmouthshire County Council and Torfaen County Borough Council.
A grant of £465,000 was provided for the project from the UK Government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), with match funding provided by each local authority. The installation was undertaken by Welsh company Silverstone Green Energy, who will also manage and maintain the charge points until 2025.
Welsh Government and Natural Resources Wales both contributed funding towards a feasibility study to support development of the project.

Councillor Deb Davies, cabinet member for sustainable development, said “Newport City Council is committed to making our city greener, not only through our work to become a carbon neutral organisation by 2030, but also by undertaking green infrastructure initiatives such as this.
“We’re delighted that this work has trebled the number of charging points available to residents and visitors, and we hope it will encourage more drivers in the city to choose greener vehicles.”
Councillor Roger Jeavons, deputy council leader and cabinet member for city services, said: “I’m very pleased that we have been able to significantly increase the availability of electric charging points in our car parks thanks to the funding.
“This is another step towards our wider ambitions of creating a healthier and greener environment.”
