Asbestos

Asbestos will need to be removed where dust release is likely, where repairing or protecting the asbestos is not practical or where the material is likely to be disturbed during routine maintenance work.

Work on asbestos insulation and lagging should only be done by a contractor licensed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Notification of asbestos removal

Most licence holders are required to notify the correct enforcing authority at least 14 days before starting licensed asbestos work.

Visit the HSE for more about notification.

Notifiable non-licensed work

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 came into force on 6 April 2012 and some types of non-licensed work with asbestos now have additional requirements.

Disposal of asbestos

Asbestos waste should be double-bagged in heavy duty polythene bags and clearly labelled with a prescribed label before being transported to an appropriately licensed disposal site.
